Port Elizabeth and Trip to Grahamstown (bilingual post) por Corina Moscovich

La Bahía Nelson Mandela une Port Elizabeth con las ciudades industriales del interior Uitenhange y Despatch. Ubicada en la Provincia Oriental del Cabo, Port Elizabeth es la 5º ciudad más grande de Sudáfrica.
 La ciudad se sitúa en la Bahía de Algoa, y es uno de los mayores puertos en Sudáfrica. En esta ciudad nació el ex Presidente Nelson Mandela. Hay que pasar unos días en Porth Elizabeth para comprender por qué se la conoce como la ciudad amiga. Su buen clima y la temperatura casi siempre cálida del agua del mar son casi tan famosas como su hospitalidad. La ciudad tiene casi un millón y medio de habitantes. 

Grahamstown
It is said that there are still ex-prisoners walking around in Grahamstown. There, the Old Gaol closed its doors in 1976 and was turned into a Backpackers in 1997. This July, on Saturday 24th there was a big concert with bands playing alive, as it was the last night of the Backpackers, because they are going to use the building as a museum.

It is recorded that at one time over 1000 people stay at the Old Gaol. After it became a hostel it used to host 30 people (or 60 during riots)


Old Gaol prisoners were forced to work on the road to Fort Beaufort- the road was used by the British during the Frontier Wars. Imprisoned women were issued with a petticoat, T-shirt and a blanket.
